3. Outstanding Special Purpose Room: Rift Sawn Oak Office at 5 Old Hill Farms
James Bond, Jay Gatsby, Don Draper all come to mind when you first look at the rift sawn oak office at 5 Old Hill Farms. It is just so incredibly cool. It appears almost simple at first glance, as it is not overly ornate and the muted color begins to lower your blood pressure immediately, but it is anything but simple. It has multiple layers of craftsmanship that begin with the raw materials.
Rift sawn oak is special for many reasons. Rift boards, those exhibiting the least amount of “ray or flake” are most often those boards with the growth rings at a 30-60 degree angle to the face of the board. They are also the narrowest boards. The effect of designing an entire room with that special wood can be amazing, and at 5 Old Hill Farms, it is.
The finished effect of the oak did not come easily. We used a labor-intensive process of staining the oak to give it some color and then, a hand rubbed limed finish to show off the wood grain. The liming process highlights the natural beauty of the wood, but it can only be achieved by soft cloth and sweat. It takes an artist touch to decide how much wax to apply and polish off.
As you enter the room, you are enveloped by the warm wood and greeted by a silver library chandelier. The wet bar beckons you to pour yourself a scotch. The counter height refrigerator is also an icemaker for those who like it “on the rocks”. The Kohler Karbon articulating faucet is perfect for this space. Kohler aptly describes it as “sleek hybrid of functionality and contemporary design”. Our custom cabinetry has glass doors to flaunt your collection and solid overhead panel doors to keep it neat.
The office powder room is simple and sleek with a wall-mounted sink and single hole polished nickel faucet. The walls are paneled and painted in a glossy white. An elegant Arteriors driftwood sunburst mirror compliments the limed oak and a seeded glass pendant makes artful shadows.
We not only oak paneled the walls, but the ceiling, bookcases, and the wet bar. The ceiling has a nice grid detail and a soffit for added depth and style. There are recessed lights that blend seamlessly. The room offers privacy with two grand glass pocket doors that are framed in oak and finished with nickel hardware and a single French door that leads to a private veranda. Four oversized windows flood the room with sunlight and offer beautiful views to the grounds and pool house.
A special retreat for business or pleasure, the Oak Library at 5 Old Hill Farms is a modern masterpiece.
4. BEST New Commercial: 100 Post Road East, Westport
100 Post Road East opened in November 2012, this is the first new commercial building constructed in downtown Westport in more than 40 years and opened fully occupied by Paper Source, a national retailer whose offerings include greeting cards, stationery, gift wrap, custom stamps and fine and artisanal papers and by Steven Alan, a New York City-based clothing retailer for women and men. Construction of 100 Post Road East represents one of the most significant development projects launched in downtown Westport during the last 10 years. The development of this property began the extension of Main Street down the Post Road to connect it with the old post office which has become a new restaurant Post 154.
